Flu season is beginning to pick up on the West Coast. If you have a fever, cough, body aches, or unusual fatigue, a same-day flu test can help you understand what may be causing your symptoms and discuss next steps with a clinician.
At Palm Urgent Care, walk-in COVID-19 and flu testing is available at our San Diego County locations. No appointment is needed. Here are 10 helpful things to know before seeking a flu test near you.
1. Flu Symptoms Can Look Like Other Illnesses
Influenza often starts suddenly. Common symptoms include fever or chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and fatigue. Some people, especially children, may also have vomiting or diarrhea. Not everyone with the flu has a fever.
COVID-19 and other respiratory infections can cause similar symptoms. A clinician may recommend testing to help identify the cause and guide care.
2. Testing Can Help Confirm What You Have
Symptoms alone cannot always distinguish flu from COVID-19 or another illness. A flu test looks for influenza viruses. Depending on your symptoms and the testing available, a clinician may also recommend a COVID-19 test.
Palm Urgent Care offers rapid COVID-19 and influenza A and B testing. In many cases, results are available during the visit. Learn more about COVID-19 and flu testing.
3. The Type of Test Can Affect the Result
Rapid flu tests do not all work in the same way. Some detect parts of the virus, while other tests look for its genetic material. The test used depends on the clinical setting and the patient's needs.
Ask the care team what type of test is being performed and when to expect a result. The CDC explains the types of flu tests and how clinicians use them.
4. Timing Matters
Testing soon after symptoms begin can help a clinician assess whether flu is the cause. When you visit, share the day your symptoms started and whether they have changed.
Timing can also matter for treatment. Prescription antiviral medicines work best when started early, often within 48 hours of symptom onset. A clinician can help decide whether an antiviral is appropriate based on your symptoms, health history, and test results. Do not delay care if you are at higher risk or feeling seriously unwell.
5. A Negative Rapid Test May Not Rule Out Flu
A negative rapid result does not always mean you do not have the flu. Rapid tests can miss some infections. A clinician may consider your symptoms, exposure, local flu activity, and other health factors when interpreting the result.
If symptoms strongly suggest flu, ask whether additional testing or follow-up is appropriate. Test results are one part of a clinical evaluation.
6. Some People Should Seek Advice Promptly
Contact a clinician early if you are pregnant, age 65 or older, have a chronic condition such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease, or have a weakened immune system. Young children may also be at increased risk of complications.
Do not wait for a test result to seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, severe dehydration, or symptoms that improve and then become worse. Call 911 for a medical emergency.
7. Same-Day Urgent Care in San Diego Can Be Convenient
When you are searching for same day urgent care San Diego, a walk-in clinic can offer an option for non-life-threatening symptoms. At Palm Urgent Care, no appointment is needed for urgent care visits, and a clinician reviews your symptoms and test results with you.
Our two El Cajon clinics are open seven days a week. The El Cajon Mollison clinic is at 505 N Mollison Ave, Suite 203, and the El Cajon Magnolia clinic is at 436 S Magnolia Ave, Suite 101. San Ysidro is open Monday through Friday at 601 E San Ysidro Blvd, #170. Check clinic locations for current hours before visiting.
8. A Visit Includes More Than a Test
A test result can be useful, but it does not replace a medical evaluation. A Palm Urgent Care clinician can review your symptoms, health history, and concerns, then discuss a care plan. If you test positive, the team can discuss treatment options when appropriate.
Walk-in testing is available, and no referral is needed. Palm Urgent Care accepts Medi-Cal, Medicare, and other major insurance plans. Coverage depends on your specific plan and circumstances. Self-pay options are also available.
9. Other On-Site Services Can Help With Different Concerns
Flu testing is only one type of diagnostic service. Depending on your symptoms, a clinician may recommend other testing or evaluation. Palm Urgent Care offers:
- COVID-19 testing for symptoms or exposure
- Flu testing for influenza A and B
- UTI testing for urinary symptoms
- H. pylori testing when evaluating certain stomach concerns
- X-rays for some injuries and other appropriate concerns
- EKGs to assess the heart's electrical activity when indicated
These tests address different health concerns. A clinician can help determine which, if any, is suitable for your situation. See Palm Urgent Care services for more information.
10. Stay Home While You Are Sick
If you have flu-like symptoms, rest and limit close contact with others. The CDC recommends returning to normal activities when symptoms are improving overall and you have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medicine.
Cover coughs and sneezes, wash your hands regularly, and consider wearing a well-fitting mask around others. These steps can help reduce the spread of respiratory illness.
